Ayalon Park is named after the Ayalon River which runs through the park from east to west. The river's basin is quite large, extending from the slopes of Jerusalem to the Shomron. Consequently, in the winter the water level rises dramatically in floods. One of Ayalon Park's more important roles is to manage the river basin and potential flooding .
The park's water system will be influenced by changes from nature – from the sparse water level in the summer months to the drastic floods during the winter months that occurs every couple of years. Groves, lakes and rivers (the Ayalon and Shappirim) will be utilized for irrigating the area and will create wild fields with many varieties of plants, trees and lush wild vegetation. The park's wild life will live off the vegetation. Trips through the park will offer visitors unique educational and leisure experiences.
The park's vast expanses will make it possible to preserve and protect its nature. Hiria's exposed slopes are dry in some places and while other places are capable of nurturing fields of plentiful wild bush and flowers with varieties of wild life that characteristically survive along the river banks, in fields, groves and even farms. In the more wet areas of Hiria, which include the look-out point, the seasonal pools, the swamps and rivers, various other species will exist that will create their own space in the ecological system on Hiria and in the park.
Today it is already possible to walk or take bike rides on the paths along the park's rivers and enjoy nature, birds and other wild life and to gaze across agricultural fields. All of this is available only minutes from our bustling cities.
The park's open, natural areas will be like a classroom for visitors of all ages and origins. School children will play an active role in studying the park's nature and researching the breading grounds that will be established. In addition, Mikve Israel will house a green house for plants intended for use in the park.
The first step in realizing the vision for nature in Ayalon Park, the open, wild fields, already exists. Throughout the park's lands, many local species of wild life and vegetation exist naturally. A simple observation of the life that exists, and an examination of the ecological systems that must be preserved and those that must be added, sheds a little bit of light on the grand project that lies ahead of introducing new life and developing the area's natural heritage. |
